It may not be Ocean Avenue, but Yellowcard is headed for Marshall to make some memories.

Capitol Records recording artist Yellowcard, known for their stint on the Vans Warped Tour and radio hits "Ocean Avenue" and "Way Away," are lined up for Southwest Minnesota State University's Fall concert. The band originated in 1997 and, having undergone a line-up change along the way, now distinguishes themselves in the alternative punk rock scene with their memorable lyrics and distinctive sound-which includes a violinist.

This unique sound may draw the largest crowd to an SMSU concert since Semisonic in 1998.

"[Including] student and staff, [attendance] was around 1700," said Scott Ewing, assistant director of student activities. "We've got the house scaled at 2500 for this one."

Ewing added that a sell-out certainly is not unlikely either, despite the smaller market in Marshall.

As of press date, the offer SMSU made to bring the band to Marshall had been confirmed. The university was still awaiting contract approval, but both parties involved said the concert is in the works.

"It looks like we're green light," Ewing said. "I just heard from the agency and [our contact] said the show's a go."

Stephanie Piram, Student Activities Committee coordinator, said the band will also be the first of their particular genre to be featured at SMSU.

"It is something that we haven't brought in before," Piram said. "They are kind of a punk rock band. We've brought in rock and rap in the past."

The title track from Yellowcard's most recent album release, 2003's "Ocean Avenue," became a radio anthem this past summer. Now the "Light and Sounds" tour that brings the band to SMSU will feature old favorites and offer a preview of their upcoming album of the same name, due to hit the shelves January 2006. The tour also features Pink Spiders and Acceptance, winners of MTV's Battle of the Bands, as opening acts.

"Lights and Sounds" will be fourth album release for Yellowcard, which features Ryan Key on vocals and guitar, Sean Mackin on violin and vocals, Ben Harper on guitar, Longineu W. Parsons on drums and Pete Mosely on bass and vocals. The band also contributed the tune "Gifts and Curses" to the "Spiderman 2" soundtrack and just last June performed a rockin' remake of Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me" at the MTV Music Awards.

The concert date is set for Nov. 17 and tickets will go on sale at the Student Center Information Desk October 13. Advance tickets are $13 for students and $18 for the general public, and tickets will also be sold on the day of the concert for $23.
