It is no secret that Schwan Food Company provides a lot of financial support to the Marshall community. They donated 60 acres of land for the new Marshall High School, a $5 million match fund for the new YMCA and financial support and scholarships for Southwest Minnesota State University.

What students may not know is how much interest Schwan has shown in recent years to SMSU's chapter of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise). Every year Schwan reserves four internships earmarked specifically for SIFE students.

"It's a project that many of the Schwan execs really like," said Scott Crowell, vice-president of student affairs.

While a SIFE chapter was established at SMSU only five years ago, Schwan has been involved with the organization for many years before that. SIFE is the largest student organization in the world that helps students to achieve their aspirations.

"Schwan's has been very active in supporting SIFE," said Randy Abbott, president of Schwan's University. "They have supported us not only financially but by also sending judges to our conferences."

The four SMSU students that have internships at Schwan this year are Kabin Pandey, Mindy Rayman, Sunshine Sinarath and Elizabeth Sinarath. All four students work at Schwan's University, a campus that provides services such as leadership development, interviewing skills training, sales training and computer training to Schwan employees as well as other organizations.

"My main job is assisting other workers with special projects. For instance, if someone applies through our course catalog, I log that entry into our system," said Elizabeth Sinarath, a senior business and marketing student.

Mindy Rayman, a junior business administration and marketing student, also works on special projects for the university.

"One project I help out with is design the curriculum for Ready-Set-Grow. This program helps train Schwan employees," Rayman said.

"I love my job there," Sinarath said. "I'm very fortunate to get an internship for a whole year rather than a month or so where I would get less experience."

"They pay very well," Rayman said. "Plus you gain more experience through these internships and can reapply for them again if you wish."

Some students may feel that Schwan is partial to business majors and caters only to SIFE students. This is simply not the case. Not only are there other internships involved, members in SIFE do not even have to be business majors to apply at Schwan's University.

"Schwan offers several internships for SMSU students throughout the company for finance, marketing and business," Abbott said. "It is just these four that are reserved for SIFE members."

Students who are interested in joining SIFE can go to one of their meetings on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in SC 249 or check out their webpage at www.smsusife.org.
