Following family tradition, Anna Haecherl came to Southwest Minnesota State University as a post-secondary student during her senior year. Like so many of her family members, Haecherl chose to stay at SMSU because she really liked the people in the English and music departments. She liked them enough that she is in her third year here, studying in music and creative writing.
Haecherl has always liked writing and music. Even when considering different majors, she wanted to do something with the two.
"I don't want a real job. I don't want to sit in a cubicle all day. I'd rather do something I'm good at and I like," she said.
Haecherl ultimately wants to do something involving music, writing and getting paid for it. One possibility is to write for magazines like "Rolling Stone".
This should make her mom proud. Her mom, much to Haecherl's appreciation, made her take piano lessons in grade school. From there, she played the French horn, drums and guitar. Percussion is her main instrument and she started in that about seven and a half years ago after attending a music camp.
"When I was fifteen, I wanted to learn to play "Time of Your Life" by Green Day, so I learned the guitar," Haecherl said.
Her interest in writing does not take the backseat to music for Haecherl. She enjoys poetry and short non-fiction pieces about crazy kid stories. Haecherl said she mainly likes to write because she has stories to tell. She doesn't want to forget her stories.
Haecherl is influenced by a range of writers including J.D. Salinger, Dave Eggers, Richard Brautigon and Charles Bukowski. Salinger's "Nine Stories", a book of short stories, is her favorite book.
While Haecherl has plenty to keep busy with a double major, she also finds time to participate in Mindscapes, band and jazz band. She also plays drums in a rock band called The Masses.
