The Senate passed a resolution that "demands/urgently requests" the administration hire an adjunct professor to teach the classes that Geoff Cunfer taught before taking leave and restore the information specialist position for the rural and regional studies program.

The resolution, which passed with nine for, two against and two abstaining, said the Student Senate wants the positions due to information received from the office of the deans, the office of the provost and the Center for Rural and Regional Studies. The resolution states, "These additions will assist the center's ability to achieve its original goals and mission."

Much of the senate discussion focused on the specific wording to use in the resolution. A previous motion that said the Student Senate "urgently requests" the positions failed with a vote of 4-6-3. The final motion was passed after the original word, "demand," was put back into the motion.

The Senate also passed a resolution by majority vote stating the process used to restructure the center for rural and regional studies was inappropriate. The resolution also stated the SMSU administration is accountable to the staff, faculty and students in the future.

SAFAC Chair Justin

McMartin

J. P. Morman, the assistant director of cultural diversity, requested a total of $9,803 for various events on behalf of six diversity-related organizations, McMartin said. The request was denied because SAFAC felt there was a lack of student involvement with the decisions regarding the requests, McMartin said. SAFAC does want to set up an appointment to meet with Morman and Don Robertson, the director of cultural diversity, McMartin said.

The requests included: $3,500 for a racism conference; $800 for an event with Rev. Samuel Kyles; $1,000 for an event with Leslie McLemore; $1,500 for an event with a church choir; $1,300 for three fraternities; $500 for movies at the Library; and $1,203 for an event with Steph Harmon of Soulistic.
