The term "friends with benefits," or FWB's, has become a more common term in the last ten to twenty years.

While many people may have their own definition, according to www.askmen.com, friends with benefits is when two friends or acquaintances decide to have casual sex. Both parties agree to not pursue each other for a later, more serious relationship.

Most commonly, people may think of this term as a boyfriend or girlfriend without the strings attached. Here is an example: Jon and Kari are friends. They have a class or two together and neither are exclusively seeing anyone else. Both feel that they have "needs" to be fulfilled. These needs or benefits are sexual. Jon and Kari decide that they would like pursue this type of "friendship."

Becoming involved in a FWB situation can prove to be challenging. While there are many pros and cons to this type of relationship, more likely than not, the friendship will end up fizzling. The friends will eventually drift farther and farther apart and then have no contact with each other whatsoever.

Some pros of having a FWB relationship is that you can have steady sexual encounters with one person and not have to worry about a real relationship. While you are carrying on a FWB relationship, you can still stay on the lookout for a more mutually exclusive relationship.

On the other hand, there are some downfalls with maintaining a FWB. First of all, one person in the relationship may become attached and want to seek more commitment within the relationship. These feelings can completely ruin the friendship. A FWB relationship may also ruin future relationships. When you have a real relationship, your partner may begin to feel jealous and will want to find out if your friends of the opposite sex were, at one time or another, a FWB.

FWB relationships can be tricky, yet at the same time may prove to be the right situation for some. If or when you choose to start this kind of relationship, just remember what can happen. It may be fantastic, or you could end up losing one of your best friends.
