Different international arts will be showcased again to Southwest Minnesota State University and the Marshall community next week. The different arts are mostly going to be from the international population of SMSU. The third annual International Arts Festival is a part of the International Education Week.
"There will be more program and less food. There will only be food as snacks," said senior sociology student Shrita Bhatta, who has been the president of the International Student Organization for almost two and a half years.
The event will take place in the Conference Center Ballroom on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. The previous event the ISO had last spring semester focused more on foods; this semester, it will emphasize international arts.
"People will be doing calligraphy and henna outside [starting] at 5:30. Inside [there] will be programs like music, dance and many others," said Bhatta.
Aside from participation of International Students, who have volunteered to help cook or help with other program activities, groups will also be performing: the Showstoppers, the Swing Club and a Spanish Band from marshal. Last year the Showstoppers presented a special number and they will do it again this year.
This time the new thing that we are going to do is have a 'mocktail' bar; it's a non-alcoholic bar," said Bhatta.
There will be three or four drink choices at the 'mocktail' bar. Drinks won't cost anything because they are included in the entrance ticket, thought there will be a tip box for the bartenders. Tickets are five dollars for students and seven dollars for faculty and non-students.
"Everybody is working very hard to make it a successful event. I would recommend people to come over and purchase ticket ahead of time and learn something about the international culture," said Bhatta.
Tickets will not be sold at the door and there are only 250 available. Once they're gone, they're gone; the event has sold out of tickets before. Tickets are available at the ISO and information desks next to the bookstore. Tickets will also be available outside the food services at varying times.
"We cannot make it bigger because the room is not big enough. We don't have stages at the gym and most of the times they always games going on," said Bhatta when asked about changing the venue of the event to accommodate a bigger crowd.
"All the program has been decided by the board members," said Bhatta.
Next spring semester, the food festival may be held at the end of March or the beginning of April but the date is yet to be determined. The event was made possible with the help of SAFAC.
