A Very Prairie Christmas: Take a Break with Holiday Hits

Kim Watkins, News Editor

The stress of holiday shopping and finals are upon us and what better way to take the pressure off than to sit down and listen to live music by the many musical groups of Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU).
If you find yourself wanting a break from studying, shopping or wrapping presents, head over to the Schwan’s Community Center for the Performing Arts (Marshall High School) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 to listen to live, holiday favorites for only $5 (free for children ages five and under).
A Very Prairie Christmas is an annual event put on by the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra and the SMSU Music Program and will include a variety of performances.
The performing groups will include both band and choir ensembles. Dr. Daniel Rieppel will conduct the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra; Dr. John Ginocchio the SMSU Jazz Ensemble and SMSU Community Concert Band; and Dr. Stephen Kingsbury the Bella Voce women’s choir, Men’s Glee Club, and SMSU Concert Choir.
Included in the concert will be other, small group ensembles as well as some poetry readings.
If you find yourself busy the night of the performance, no worries. The concert will be broadcast on KEYC-TV (Mankato) from 10-10:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
This is the final performance for all music groups before the holidays, so make sure to come out and join in the holiday spirit.
