While the US deals with hurricanes and forest fires, other countries have also been hit with natural disasters.

Some of the worst of these natural disasters are the three earthquakes that have hit Mexico in less than a month.

The first had a magnitude of 8.1 and occurred Sept. 8, killing nearly 100 people. It had been almost 100 years since Mexico experienced an earthquake of that degree, but they avoided much damage with the epicenter being located in the Pacific Ocean.

Ten days after the first earthquake, Mexico was rocked again with a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Sept. 19. Without any time to recover, another 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck early on Sept. 23.

Jocelyn Julisa, a sophomore at SMSU, has family in Mexico and wasn’t aware of the earthquakes right away.

“I honestly didn’t know about the earthquakes until people were on social media saying #PrayForMexico and sharing videos,” said Julisa.

After finding out about the first earthquake, Julisa immediately worked to get in contact with her family.

“My family wasn’t affected from it as much as the main parts, they were just far enough to feel a little bit,” said Julisa about the Sept 8. earthquake.

Even though the next two earthquakes hit closer to Julisa’s family, they were still safe from the effects.

“I’ve been messaging my cousins, who just answered [Thursday], and thankfully everyone is good,” said Julisa.

With the second earthquake killing more than 300 people, it’s no surprise that Julisa was relieved her family was safe.
