SMSU is known for its outstanding writing opportunities for its students and the professors who teach in the English department. Leo Dangel was no exception.

According to the Independent newspaper, “Dangel taught literature and writing classes for 25 years, at SMSU, before retiring in 1993.” Dangel was born in the year of 1941 in South Dakota.  When he was about twenty years old, he was in a serious car accident which left him paralyzed, thus forcing him to have to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Growing up on a farm greatly influenced Dangel’s future work as a writer. They inspired him to write poems such as One September Afternoon, Behind the Plow, In Memoriam and many others.

According to americanlifeinpoetry.org «the poems of Leo Dangel are known for their clarity and artful understatement.” Dangel’s poems tell their readers about enjoying the simple things in life.

Dangel passed away in 2016 at age 75. In his memory, the Leo Dangel Creative Writing and Literature Scholarship was created. Up to $1,200 in awards is applied toward the tuition of the selected student.

As this is a creative writing and literature scholarship, it will be awarded to a student who demonstrates creative ability and has good academic standing in literature and English classes. The scholarship will be awarded in the fall only if the student is enrolled in spring classes at SMSU.

The donors of this scholarship would be the faculty staff and friends of the SMSU’s creative writing and literature programs.  The deadline to submit 8-5 creative written works is Nov. 30.
