Mustangs Go 1-1 in Doubleheader

The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team went 1-1 at the nonconference doubleheader against Northern State University on Friday, March 16. Coming off a 7-3 loss in the first game, the Mustangs trampled the Wolves in game two, putting together a 6-1 win.

In game one, SMSU maintained a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning, but could not recover after NSU took the lead following a two-out rally. In game one, Adam Thygesen, Ben Korger, and Kyle Young all led SMSU, each with two hits. Doug Mead and Young also recorded one RBI apiece.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Schmidt allowed just two runs on six hits and racked up a career-high six strikeouts in five innings. Corby McGlauflin took the loss after allowing two runs and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.
SMSU started the first game with Thygesen scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Kyle Young. NSU rallied back with two runs of their own in the second inning, followed by a pair of runs by the Mustangs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Korger and Chris Eichten chipped in a single apiece, followed by a game-tying RBI single by Mead. Thygesen’s walk loaded the bases, followed by a hit by Jordon Kontz to score Korger and give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.
A two-out NSU rally in the sixth inning helped the Wolves regain the lead and the win. Consecutive singles and a walk gave NSU a 4-3 edge. Three runs by the Wolves in the seventh inning secured the win.
Nate Dickhausen walked three and struck out three in the second game. However, he allowed just two hits and one run in six innings, earning him the victory. Dickhausen threw 81 pitches in the game, 52 of them being strikes.
A run by the Wolves in the second inning earned them an early 1-0 advantage. SMSU bounced back in the third inning with a Thygesen home run to tie the game at 1-1. Kontz got on base after a walk and later scored on a hit by Brian Ness.
The Mustangs found themselves with a 3-1 advantage in the fifth inning after Korger led with a single and scored on a Thygesen hit.
SMSU extended their lead in the sixth inning after a Tyler Flattum single, later scoring on an inside-the-park home run by Mead. Korger scored on a Thygesen double, giving the Mustangs a 6-1 advantage.
Thygesen finished two for three and added three RBIs during the game. Mead, Flattum, Korger, and Jon Ellis each added two hits apiece.
