In week one, the Mustangs took a hard loss after letting St. Cloud slip through their fingers. St. Cloud had a strong second half showing, proving to be too much for SMSU.

Looking for redemption on Sept. 7, the Mustang’s strong defense and offense powered them to a 51-35 win over the MSU Moorhead Dragons. The win gave them a 1-1 record.

The Mustangs hit the road and headed to Moorhead, Minnesota for the first of 6 road games, ready to take on the Dragons in their second week showdown. The Mustangs came to play as they forced four interceptions and a fumble helping them to their 550 yards of offense and 27 first downs.

SMSU quarterback Blake Gimbel tied a career high with five touchdowns and 389 yards. He completed 32 of 44 pass attempts, many of which were to teammate Nate Huot, who also had a game for the record books.

Huot caught a team high of nine passes and achieved his tenth career 100-yard receiving game, which places him fourth in team history.

Continuing the strong offensive trend, Max Simmons finished the game with 78 total rushing yards from 27 carries, as well as catching four passes for 50 more yards for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will be returning to action at home Saturday, September 16, for the annual Ag Bowl, where they plan to take down the Minot State Beavers. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Events Center.
