Women’s Volleyball Start Their Season Off Strong

SMSU’s Women’s Volleyball team wins their first three NSIC conference games.

The team competed successfully at the West Florida Invitational and the Colorado Premier Challenge.

The Florida Invitational ran on August 24 and 25 and was held at Pensacola State College in Pensacola, Florida.

SMSU first faced Western Washington on Friday, August 25 to score a 3-0 win. The Mustangs suffered a 1-3 loss at the hands of West Florida.

The next day, the team went on to face Regis and Wheeling Jesuit. The Mustang repeated their performance on Friday with 1 win and 1 loss. Despite a 2-3 score against Regis, the Mustangs bounced back to pull a 3-0 victory over wheeling Jesuit.

SMSU scored back to back victories on the first day of the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Challenge ran the Weekend of August 31 to September 1 and was held at Regis Fieldhouse in Denver Colorado.

SMSU scored 3-2 against Colorado Christian and then won 3-0 against Saint Leo  that same day. The Mustangs started Saturday strong with a 3-0 win against Missouri State. SMSU fell 0-3 to Concordia-Saint Paul,  suffering their only loss of the Challenge.

The volleyball team started their NSIC conference with their “white-out” home game.  Facing Augustana State on September 6, SMSU scores a 3-0 victory.

On September 8, the Mustangs hit the road to face Wayne State. After a close, five-set game, the Mustangs beat Wayne state with a 3-2 score.

The  Mustangs returned home on September 11, to face Sioux Falls. SMSU continues their winning streak with a 3-0 win against Sioux Falls.

“SMSU’s a great team and always fun to play them,” Bria Barfnecht a right-side hitter for Sioux Falls said . SMSU will face Sioux Falls on October 9.

“We’re going to come back fighting,” Sioux Falls’ outside hitter, Makenna Rockeman said .

The Mustang’s winning streak came to a bitter end on September 14.

SMSU faced Winona state on their homecourt Friday night and lost all three sets.

“You know in our conference, it’s just a battle,” said Head Coach Terry Culhane.

“I think we have a great group of really nice kids.”

The Mustang’s redeemed themselves with a victory over Upper Iowa State. Despite losing the first set, SMSU earns a 3-1 victory on their homecourt.

SMSU now sits 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC. The Mustangs will head to Mankato to play Minnesota State on September 21.
