Senior Kayla Jansky recently finished her fourth and final year of cross country at SMSU. She has been a
leader and a fierce competitor throughout her time on the team. Jansky reflects past seasons, saying that they were all experiences that helped her to improve.
“I really enjoyed it here. I thought it was a really good school to try to improve myself and take leadership for the underclassmen behind me. It was great to be in a small community like back home in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.”
Janksy noted the newness of the program when she started, and how it has developed since. “We were a new program,” she said. It has been a great program to be a part of and grow in. I loved traveling with my team.”
The SMSU Cross Country Women’s team placed 15th at the NSIC Championship meet on Oct. 26, 2019, and Kayla placed 67th with a final time of 24:52. Looking back at her senior year running for SMSU Cross Country, Janksy remained positive. “My senior season wasn’t a letdown; it was more of not being a mental case my conference meet,” she said. ” I would’ve had a better race for my last one ever.”
The senior who saw the start of the program also saw the addition of a new coach this season through Kirk Nauman. Announced on Aug. 5th, 2019 as the new head coach, Kirk brought with him to SMSU 20 years worth of collegiate coaching experience. Jansky thinks that he will be just what the team needs in order to achieve continued success in the future.
“The new coach Kirk (Nauman) is an outstanding man,” Jansky said. “He knows what he’s talking about. He knows how to coach you. He knows you individually, and that was something that this program needs– having him will be a great fit for the future.”
Jansky will be competing in track this spring. She will also be graduating this next semester with a Special Education major.
