The Art Program at SMSU has several goals according to President Abbey Baumman.

“One, to enrich the educational experience of all students by providing them the opportunity to view, discuss and produce works of art. Two, to provide quality baccalaureate degrees in art and art education. Three, to provide a vocational orientation to art through preparation in such areas as art education and graphic design.”

One of the ways you can get involved with this program is by joining the Southwest Minnesota State University student-run Art Club. It is an organization formed by students that are interested in visual arts. It is open to everyone and you do not have to be an art major to participate. Art majors and non art majors are encouraged to join.

Art Club meets every Friday from 12:00pm-1:00pm in room BA133. Some of the previous activities have included pumpkin carvings, tie-dying shirts, pizza parties, pictionary battles, creating a large zentangle (which you can see hanging in BA), creating mono prints, discussing trips to museums, galleries and community service events, and many other small art activities in between.

Fresh Check Day is an upcoming event that the Art Club will be participating in. Students will have an opportunity to come to their booth and create their own picture in a square, anywhere they would like, on a canvas that is 6 feet by 7 feet. The idea of the overall canvas is to have an “organized mess”—just like during final’s week!

At the end of March on the 26th-27th, the club will be hosting guest artist Michon Weeks. She will be providing a 40 minute presentation open to the Marshall and Campus communities and will also be sitting in on one of the art classes, followed by lunch with members of the Art Club.

The Co-Vice Presidents are Tashi Kunkel and Holly Duhoux. Along with Abbey, any and all questions or concerns are welcome. Abby can be reached at [email protected]
